Twitchy network

VB 4.2.4 is installed on a Win7 system with 4gb and single 54mb network interface.
I have installed Ubuntu 12.0.4 server, currently using a bridged network interface (not nat).
When running things such as apt-get upgrade, the thru-put is so bad that I get connection errors before it can finish. Fortunately, when I rerun that operation, it picks up from where it 'broke'.

I plan on firing up a couple more such systems in a MAAS configuration for testing, hence the bridged option.

Any ideas for changing/tracking this problem?

Switch to the paravirtual network adapter and see if it works better.

Thanks for the advice.
just set it up with bridged network on the para-virt interface, then I started the maas-import-isos

Still slower than a dead dog.

Sorry to say I don't have any slow down on any of my OSes. I run on a Linux host though. Maybe someone that uses Windows host can help or you will need to open a ticket at bugtracker

I just changed over to a nat interface using dhcp and tried again. The speed picked right up. Just a guess, but I might configure the three systems to have two interfaces each, one nat and one bridged such that they can talk to each other.

That might work but if you post a ticket then it might just get fixed.

My problem is almost the same.my host os is win 7 64 and the guest os is win xp but the network(bridged) on guest os doesn't work properly. It work fine for a minute then it stops without any reason.
Virtual box is great .i love the program but this problem makes it useless for me. :(

What info do I need to post in order for it to be considered as a 'bug'?

Host, Host specifications, guest, guest log file, and a complete description of what you are seeing and how you are monitoring the bandwidth, including applications you are using. The more information you can provide the better it will be.

I am going to rebuild the initial guest (Ubuntu 12.0.4 server) and apply the initial apt-get upgrade. That is more than enough to cause the problem, then I will post the log file(s) with the bug entry. FYI, I am building the guest with two cpus and 1gb memory, using bridged network.

I am not running any monitoring equipment, but the output from apt just stops for a while then picks up later, then stops etc etc.

Is that while transferring on the local LAN?
Internet access would be a different animal you know. No way to track that.

Ok, I just rebuilt. Using an iso dvd on the host and doing litle or no network during build (ntp etc). No problems. Then I did an upgrade across the network (lan and wan) and it worked just fine. So I did an install of gnome-desktop-environment (1000+ packages) and it ran at normal speed with no slow down.

I am going to redo all of this, starting with a nat connection and then changing it part way through to bridged to see if that brings on the problem.

I would not change it part way through. Beside it not showing you anything I would not switch live (even if it is allowed). If bridged is working now I would leave it alone and add your app and see what happens.

The purpose of changing the settings is to see if I can bring on the problem, because in real live it is going to be done this way by someone.

Anyway, my problems seems to have completely disappeared. I cannot reproduce it!

So, I will take the blame for the problem for now, but don't know how I did it.
