[SOLVED] Cannot upgrade VirtualBox

Hi guys,

I have a VirtualBox install on my WinXP machine at work.
Recently I have come across all manner of issues, which always seem to pop up the error:

Code: Select all

Failed to access the USB subsystem.

Could not load the Host USB Proxy......etc.

Result Code:
E_FAIL (0x00004005)
Component:
Host
Interface:
IHost {dab4a2b8-c735-4f08-94fc-9bec84182e2f}
Callee:
IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91}
Also I cannot install any new version of VirtualBox (upgrade) - it simply fails and rolls back without any error message. Extension Packs also will not upgrade.
I have not tried to uninstall / reinstall as I don't want to lose my VMs (can they be kept??)

Could anyone point me in the right direction here? What further info is needed?

Thanks.

Uninstalling the software does not lose your VMs.

Do so, then make sure you "Run as administrator" when you reinstall - and make sure you are installing it for the correct user account. Then install the extension pack, as USB 2.0 devices will not work without it.

Just tried and it won't uninstall either - no error report, just proceeds to uninstall then rolls back and fails

Just wondering if anybody has any further ideas about rectifying this?

Perhaps manually deleting the files and all associated registry keys or something?

I managed to get the problem resolved myself.

I downloaded the old installer for my version (4.1.10) and selected to reinsall/repair. The I ran the updated installer and everything is working again :lol:
