Window movement very slow

Post by Apotekarnes »

Hello everyone,

I run Virtualbox on a MacOS host system: OS X 10.8 (12A269), MacBook Pro Retina 15', 2.6 gHz 8 GB Ram, 512 GB SSD
The guest system is Ubuntu 12.10.

Ubuntu runs quite fast except when I want to move any windows around by dragging them with the mouse. The movement of the windows lags extremely behind the track of the cursor.
Also when I want to select several objects e.g. on the desktop, the orange selection field takes very long to expand to the destined size.
Sometimes it can take like 5 or 10 seconds until the windows reach the positions I dragged them. During that time, the system is very occupied and doesn't react quickly to other actions.

What can I do?

Installing Nvidia graphic drivers didn't help. It instead made everything worse.

Any help appreciated,

Best regards,

Apotekarnes

Ubuntu has removed the fallback if accelerated video can not be detected at boot and added software acceleration (LLVM)
The fix for this is expected in the next maintenance release, or you can try one of the test builds https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11107

Unfortunately the link for the OS X test build is invalid :(

Any other possibilities?

Post to the ticket and ask for a refreshed link. More than likely the maintenance build will be out in a few days though.

Hello,

I replied to the ticket, but no new link was posted :(

Another question:

Which software does get a new "maintenance release" in the next days, Virtualbox or Ubuntu?
Is it released already? If not, how can I check?

Regards

Just tried the test build 4.2.5 for OSX and although acceleration seems to work. it's not working as expected.
This is a screen from Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon.

edit: btw, if you drag a window too fast the window stair steps, i.e you can see it drawing itself a section at a time.

@loukingjr,

In the guest terminal run glxinfo | grep OpenGL and post the results here.

Unfortunately, the new OS X build has the following problem:

3D acceleration causes the left-sided Dash-bar to crash immediately. Also all upper window bars disappear, so it is not possible to close or minimize any window. Navigation is impossible that way. Also many objects appear only if the cursor moves over them. The behavior of the orange selection area is fast now, however.

What can I do to prevent Unity/Compiz/Dash-bar from crashing/disappearing?
