Can no longer connect USB printer

I'm using VirtualBox/4.2.4 in a Windows Vista host. I have a virtual machine with Windows XP. Both OS are 32 bits. I need XP to run a very old HP printer utility for my HP Deskjet 5150 that won't run on Vista.
I hadn't used the utility for a while and now I've discovered that I can no longer attach the printer, which is a USB device. It's listed as the (only) device filter in the VM settings but they I try to connect it from the "Devices" menu I get an error dialogue:
I've restarted the host computer and nothing changed. It's worth noting that the printer is connected and works fine from the host.
What broke and how can I fix it?
