About virtual disk usage

Post by graghav2010 »

Is their any difference in creating .vdi disk or .vmdk in terms of access speed or anything. Please explain if I create .vmdk then will their be any problem in anyterms with virtualbox? I will be creating fixed size disk.

No, there will be no real performance difference. VDI is native and hence is supported for everything. Some features, like disk resizing with VBoxManage, do not support VMDK. I would say stick to VDI.

You don't mention VHD, which is good. It should be avoided (it has design flaws which make it prone to corruption).

While I'm on the subject of recommended disk usage: avoid snapshots, which are also very prone to corruption. Also disk space usage will be much less without them, and many other management tasks will be greatly simplified.
