A differencing image of snapshot

Post by Net-Smart »

Code: Select all

Failed to open virtual machine located in C:/VirtualBox VMs/Windows 7.vbox.

A differencing image of snapshot {fb5734e9-7a30-4b53-91fb-80866ba0382b} could not be found. Could not find an open hard disk with UUID {42cb10b1-2803-4f22-beb3-2f208693ddc8}.

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: SnapshotMachine
Interface: IMachine {22781af3-1c96-4126-9edf-67a020e0e858}
Callee: IVirtualBox {3b2f08eb-b810-4715-bee0-bb06b9880ad2}
I googled this error message and got links mostly to this forum, but i could not find an easy explanation on what it means or working solution, so far i have messed with CloneVDI, vboxmanage, edited both the .xml and the .vdi files but every time it just got worse
i know the error is due to some kind of hashing problem regarding the vdi and the snapshots and it seems to be pretty common so i guess it a system flaw if no simple solution exits, i also need to mention that once i failed to edit the vm in the gui
i removed it and now afterwards i can see that may have been wrong but it always worked for other problems.

Something you did provoked this error, what was it? It can be caused by a number of things such as manually deleting a VM file on the host, manually editing the .vbox file. Attempting to using the VDI from one VM in another VM etc. This info is required.

Also, you say you tried several things, but you are not specific about exactly what. We need this info too.

I had the same error this morning.

The Host is Windows Enterprise 2008 SP2
Two virtual Machines, Alpha and Beta, each running Ubuntu.

Beta has been up all week running a live Beta, hence my distress that any restore I do from any Windows ShadowProtect backup since Monday also gives the same error.

Beta and Alpha both last restarted 12:45 PM Monday 9-Dec without a problem. Shut down both Alpha AND Beta 5:35 AM this morning 13-Dec after updates to their Ubuntu operating systems (adding ntp and other updates).

Alpha came up without a problem.

Beta failed on VirtualBox Start with:
Failed to open virtual machine located in C:/Virtual Machines/Beta/Beta.vbox.

A differencing image of snapshot {a3a22997-062e-4a37-8bb1-731bcda63011} could not be found. Could not find an open hard disk with UUID {b5e39bfd-4ecb-4bb3-ae90-36b6b7c40123}.

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: SnapshotMachine
Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91}
Callee: IVirtualBox {c28be65f-1a8f-43b4-81f1-eb60cb516e66}
No manual changes to either Alpha or Beta VirtualBox files on the host since Monday start, no manual editing of .vbox file, no attempt to use the VDI from one VM in another.

Given it is Friday, our situation is salvageable if I can get the beta back online with this week's beta user data there. Otherwise, this beta is dead in the water, as it is only to run until the end of next week.

Sorry to say this has shaken my faith in VirtualBox which, until today, has been working well for us.

Hope someone can help!

Thanks in advance.

Well, you see the UUIDs listed in the error message - you can see for yourself if snapshots with those UUIDs exist in the Snapshots subfolder.

If you use snapshots they will eventually get corrupted. It's the nature of the beast.
