Move Ubuntu Server Virtual Machine from Linux to Windows

Hello there.

I've created a virtual machine under Xubuntu Linux 12.10 x86_64 and installed Ubuntu Server 12.10 x86_64 on it, then i configured it for my use case - no problems here, everything works great.

Later on, i terminated the machine and copied the virtual disk image (VDI-file) to my Windows 7 (64-bit) machine, then i re-created the virtual machine and attached image file to it. But when i try to boot it, i can't get past the GRUB menu - i see just a black window and nothing is happening.

Any ideas how to launch this machine on Windows host will be much appreciated, thanks!

How did you copy the VDI?

Did the original VM use snapshots?

Unless you know what you're doing, it's usually better to copy the VM as a whole, not just bits of it like the bare VDI. In the case of moving between different host OS I would simply copy the folder and edit the .vbox file appropriately for the target host (.vbox is an xml file, use a good text editor). If I was less familiar with the innards of a .vbox file I might simply use the export/import feature.

I should answer myself. In order to run 64-bit guest OS your hardware and software stack (CPU, motherboard, bios) MUST support Intel VT-x virtualization technology or some analogy from other vendors. If you want your virtual machine to be most compatible use x86 version of guest OS.
