Ubuntu no longer boots up properly

I was using ubuntu 12.04 on a fixed vdi when the drive maxed out so I decided to change the vdi from fixed to dynamic. So I unmounted the vdi from the VM, made a copy then successfully changed it to dynamic. Now whenever I try to boot the VM again it gives me a "input device settings could not be detected correctly". Both vdi drives give me this error now, and other ubuntu VMs behave similarly. Not really sure what to do now, and googling doesn't pull up much.
I only want to boot it up so I can pull some python files off of the vdi. If there is another way to do this to access the vdi's contents, I would like to know how.
