Hi!
So, I'm using Win 7 Professional as host OS for my VB. Win 2k3 is guest system which is connected to internet by Adapter #1 using NAT and to internal virtual network using Adapter #2. The internal network will consist of Win XP Pro client, Win 7 client and Linux client. By now, i'm using only Win XP Pro client to test how it will work.
The main role of Win 2k3 will be routing connection between Internet and internal network - only way to Internet for client OS's will be through Win 2k3.
I've set following network settings for adapters:
For Win 2k3 Adapter #1 is NAT. IP and DNS servers are set automatically. At the moment, IP for NAT is 10.0.2.15, both gateway and DHCP server are 10.0.2.2 and network mask is 255.255.255.0. Adapter #2 is Internal Network. IP for intnet is 192.168.1.10 (set by me) and network mask 255.255.255.0. No DNS or gateway.
For Win XP Pro (and for others soon), there is only one adapter set to Internal Network. The IP in Win XP is set to 192.168.1.11 (set by me), mask is 255.255.255.0, and that's all.
Both client and server can ping themselves (I know it can be changed through Windows Firewall).
And here's the problem:
When I set 192.168.1.10 as a DNS server for Win XP client, and ping google.com it finds the google.com IP address but says the host is unreachable. So the connection between internal network and internet (routed by win 2k3) is working in 50%, say.
When I don't set any DNS server, the client XP can only ping server, but every time I try ping some domain, it says: "Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again"
What i have to change, precisely, to make this network working?
Cheers.

Re: Windows Server 2k3 guest as a router for internal networ
Assuming that you have actually configured the W2003 server properly (which is outside the scope of this forum) why did you not set the XP guest DNS? How do you figure it is going to resolve the friendly name?
Re: Windows Server 2k3 guest as a router for internal networ
I've set XP guest DNS to 192.168.1.10 - which is also static IP of Win 2k3's Internal Adapter. When this DNS's set, ping looks like this:
But when I set DNS to empty:
And now I'm confused. whether Win 2k3 is configured not like it should be or XP client.
Code: Select all
C:\Documents and Settings\User>ping google.com
Pinging google.com [173.194.70.100] with 32 bytes of data:
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Ping statistics for 173.194.70.100:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
C:\Documents and Settings\User>
Code: Select all
C:\Documents and Settings\User>ping google.com
Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again.
C:\Documents and Settings\User>

If the Win 2003 server can reach the Internet then your issue is routing so it would be the win 2003 setup.

This really has nothing to do with VirtualBox. The fact that you are using a virtual machine does not change the way routing works.
If you cannot sort it out for yourself, post in a Windows server networking forum.
