Noob needing a little help with headless

Hi folks.
I'm running VBox on a Windows 7 Professional desktop and the box is a debian instance. It's a headless installation. The principle is that it'll be run on a schedule such that it starts, performs a task and then shuts the vbox down. All of that works exactly as expected. The minor problem is that if it's run as a simple headless box with the command line...
Vboxmanage startvm "Box name" --type headless
it logs in as root, runs the job and then shuts down so you can't log in and actually DO anything; the job was in a .rclocal and got run as soon as the box logged in! I've managed to undo that little gem but I now have the problem of getting it to log in as a different user so that it runs the job in that user's /home directory. I can then log in from an interactive session and actually do things.
I've looked through the manual but can't find what I need so...
anyone any idea how to specify a user name and password to log in with?
Thankies.
Simon.
