Mouse disappears

Installing Windows 8 pro upgrade.
The application installs successfully until Win 8 asks to point and click on a corner of its windows. At this stage no mouse is available. Up until this point the mouse works fine in both the VBox and in the host (Win 7) and returns after the installation ignores the request and proceeds.
The result is I have Win 8 but no Metro. I can surf but that is about all. I have downloaded 2 copies of Win 8 and reinstalled VBox to no avail.
Am I missing something?
