Windows Server 2012 freezes

I have Windows Server 2012 installed as a guest. It (Windows, not VirtualBox) freezes frequently. I don't think I've ever gotten as much as a full hour of operation.

Frustrated, I finally threw away the entire machine & disk, rebuilt it, and reinstalled Win2012. Same problem.

I have five other Windows VM's, three with XP, one with 7, one with 8. They all work fine. (And none are running simultaneously with this one.)

Guest: Windows Server 2012 64 bit, 4 GB RAM.

Host: Windows 7 64 bit, 16 GB RAM. VirtualBox 4.2.4

Anyone have an idea what's wrong and what I can do about it? Maybe just wait for the next release...

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

Is that the one the manual calls "release log file"? Here it is.

You can see at line 1129 where I reset the machine after it froze again, this time during a software installation. (The previous time was during Windows Update.)

I don't much understand this log though. Maybe someone else can tell me what happened.

Are all the VMs located on the same host drive? I ask because I'm seeing lots of disk errors in the log. Also, how much free space is left on that host drive?

The host is an SSD with 256 GB, 160 GB free. The VMs are located on another (internal SATA) drive that has 600+ GB free.

FWIW, there are no errors reported in the Windows event log, other than a couple posted on reboot saying that the system had shut down abnormally.

Really, is no one else having this problem? Or is no one else running Windows Server 2012 as a guest?

@Paul2.

Code: Select all

00:00:01.217885 NX - No-Execute Page Protection = 0 (1)
AFAIK 2012 and 8 require NX enabled to operate properly This would have been set at creation, but not on an upgrade. Enable it (PAE/NX) in the guest and see if it works.

I enabled PAE/NX and it seems to have fixed the issue. thanks so much!

I too have seen this issue. I set up my servers with VT-X/AMD-V enabled, but with Nested Paging turned off. I also turned on PAE/NX and still got Server 2012 to freeze after less than an hour. I have tried turning PAE/NX off to see if that makes any difference.

I just looked at an older log file from my server that was using PAE/NX that locked up and here it is as well...if that helps.
