Auto-Resize not available in4.2.4 r81684

Post by Tim on Exmoor »

Windows 7 Professional host and Ubuntu 12.04 guest.

I have been running Ubuntu in VirtualBox for over a year now and normally have no problems with the Auto Resize of the Guest display. However after upgrading Virtualbox to 4.2.4 r 81684 last week I can find no way of persuading the guest display to resize. I have reinstalled Guest Additions several times, with no error messages displayed and have rebooted after each installation. The option to "auto-size guest display" is greyed out and Host+G has no effect.

This is becoming very frustating as my browser displays within Ubuntu no longer show the full browser screen and I have to keep scrolling left-to-right and up-and-down.

Increasing the VirtualBox window just leaves the Guest Display in the centre of a screen.

We need two things
The guests log file (as an attachment)
As well as /var/log/vboxadd-install.log (from the guest)

Thanks.
The vboxadd-install log was too large to upload so I have tailed the last 100 lines into the attached log: hope this is sufficient
I'm not quite sure which is the "guests log" file so attaching the VBoxGuestAdditions.log hoping this is the correct one.

It looks like the install did not complete. I would try again and watch the terminal closely for error messages. In fact you can post the results here.

Also make sure the guest has the following installed before you try.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential linux-headers-generic
Note: This is all assuming that you are installing the VirtualBox guest additions and not the ones from the Kubuntu repo which we don't support.

Thanks for the rapid reply. I executed the linux headers install and it did install additional modules. I then reinstalled Guest Additions and was going to attach a screen grab of the terminal display - but now find that I cannot upload a PDF. There was just one "fail" referencing the vboxadd-install-X11 log and when I looked at that log file it had just one line reading -
install_x11_startup.app: no script given.

I still cannot resize the guest display and Auto-Resize Guest Display is still disabled.

I confirm I am using the Guest Additions that come with the VirtualBox latest version.

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

Code: Select all

install_x11_startup.app: no script given.
This is the issue. Something is corrupt in the Guest additions install.
I would run the GA install again with uninstall switch to completely remove the present guest additions. (must be run from the command line to do this).
I would also open synaptic and make sure that nothing VBox or VirtualBox is left over.
Then run the install again and see if this helps.

Thank you for your patient help: much appreciated. Once I had found the uninstall.sh in /opt and reinstalled Guest Additions I have my guest screen size back. Thanks again.
