Not nearly enough information.

Do not paraphrase error messages. Give the precise error message, and the precise context in which the message arose - a screenshot would probably help explain both.

In any case I would hope you have researched previous USB questions, e.g. using Google "USB site:forums.virtualbox.org".

First, I connect ATMEGA 32U device, click USB icon and select 'ATMEL ATm32U4DFU' USB filter on VB.
I just want firmware up my ATMEGA device. http://i49.tinypic.com/o8ez44.png

Right, so the message was coming from inside the guest, not from VirtualBox. In this context an unknown USB device is one which does not fit into a standard device class (e.g. not a mass storage device), and there is no driver installed for it. Presumably you need to find XP drivers for it.

I suggest that you also add a filter for this device in the VM settings (after making sure that USB and USB 2.0 are both enabled), and not rely on attaching the device via the Device menu of the VM. My experience is that the device is more likely to work when used that way.
