Moving .vdmk file?

Post by rkb »

It turns out that my host is running out of disk space and a large part of that is .vdmk file. Can I simply move this file and change the settings to point to the new location and it will work? Are there any other caveats that I need to be aware of? It turns out "point to a new location" is harder than I thought. Hints? Thank you.

No, that is the wrong way. You need to move the entire VM folder.
  1. Run the VirtualBox UI, right click the VM and select "Remove". Do not delete the physical files.
  2. Shut down VirtualBox (UI and all VMs).
  3. Use host to move the VM folder to your preferred location.
  4. Run VirtualBox again, use Machine|Add... to add back the VM (.vbox file) from its new location.

There is a folder that contains the .vbox file along with the .vdmk file (with some other files) and a Log sub folder. Can I move just all of the files and the Log sub folder or do I have to move the parent folder to the .vobx file as well? Does it matter what the parent folder of the .vbox file is called? Thanks again.

You have to move the contents of the parent folder as a unit. IME that is most easily done if you just copy/move the folder, however no, it doesn't actually matter what the parent folder is called. When you add the VM back to the UI then the VM register will record the path to the .vbox file, and of course after that you can't easily rename it.
