titlebar for 4.2.4 with Ubuntu 1204 + host additions guest

I upgraded to 4.2.4 this morning and installed host additions. Now I am seeing a frustrating problem with the Ubuntu getting confused about the size of the window when I am running in the default mode where the guest is Ubuntu 12.04 running in an ordinary macosx window.
At the login window for the ubuntu guest, everything looks and behaves normally. I have a standard window bar at the top of the screen, with the title and the red, yellow and green buttons in the left. When I log in, the ubuntu window manager draws over this menu bar, leaving a tiny remainder just a pixel or two high, and everything in the window is displayed shifted up by the same amount. Note that I write "displayed" because that's what happens: even though things are "displayed" shifted up, their active regions are still in their original locations. This means that if I want to click on a button or select something, I have to position the mouse cursor below the appearance of that thing by the corresponding amount. This gets frustrating very quickly.
If I resize the window, while the resizing is going on I see the macosx titlebar as normal, and everything looks right, but when I stop resizing it slides up again.
If I load a VM that has the 4.1.23 host additions, it works properly. It's only when I run 4.2.4 + the 4.2.4 additions that it does this.
My mac is running 10.8.2 with the latest software updates. The VM is Ubuntu 12.04.1, also completely up-to-date. The VM has the 4.2.4 host additions installed. The VM was created with a 4.1.22(?) version of VirtualBox, if that matters.
Any ideas how to fix it?
