Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly
Re: Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly
Any operation after quit of VM results in Failed to open session for VM.. (this was after restart attempt. Same thing after power off):
I can quit VBox manager and restart it and get back to seeing USB devices.

Re: Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly
I wonder if it is because of the USB 3.0 on the MacBook Pro Retina that VirtualBox doesn't support. I installed the Windows version of VirtualBox on Windows 8 through Boot Camp and VirtualBox does not recognize the USB flash drive either. Of course, my Macbook Pro Retina can support USB 2.0, but I guess VirtualBox still doesn't cooperate.
Do you want me to paste a screenshot of the Windows (on Mac) VirtualBox error?

My mac is a 15" Late 2011 Macbook Pro. USB 2.0 (High rez screen) 16G Ram, OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)CHUCKsPowerFist wrote:I wonder if it is because of the USB 3.0 on the MacBook Pro Retina that VirtualBox doesn't support. I suspect I may have to file a new bug report as suggested by Chip....

Keep in mind that the bugs had occurred in the version before I updated to 4.2.4.bitman wrote:My mac is a 15" Late 2011 Macbook Pro. Re: Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly
Anybody try deleting the virtualbox preferences in OSX and letting them recreate?
My USB credit card reader won't work in Windows after the 4.2.4 upgrade. I think I'll try that.

If deleting the VirtualBox preferences works for you, can you post the directions on how you did it?brycesteiner wrote:Anybody try deleting the virtualbox preferences in OSX and letting them recreate?

Re: Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly
I forgot about doing it. I need to do it now though. I'm having too many problems.
Wouldn't it be deleting
Home/Library/Preferences/org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBox.plist
Home/Library/Preferences/org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBoxVM.plist
that is what I was going to do.
UPDATE: Okay my problem was stupidity. First you can delete the preferences okay. Second my problem was the credit card reader needed plugged in after the VM was started. How stupid I am! I started having the problem because the OSX had an update and it needed restarted. The script then starts the VM automatically but I hadn't unplugged and plugged back in the creditcard reader so it wasn't working. The new version (2.4.2) works too. Now all is fine. I apologize for my confusing your real issue!
thanks,
Bryce

Re: Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly
Hi, I have the same issue on macosx 10.7.5 and vb 4.2.4 with an external HD JMicron Samsung G2 portable. I uninstalled VB and reinstalled it, then run the oracle extension pack (same version). After restarting the guest (a wxp sp3) I spend several minutes in front of the screen, wxp seemed frozen and the external hd was active these minutes and after some minutes (maybe about 10) the hd was shown up in the computer (wxp3). This occured several times (uninstall / reinstall / rerun /working /after some startups failing).

Re: Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly
.
I had a similar problem trying to use a card reader and the solution for me was to:
1. Remove all cards from the reader before attaching it to the MAC
Once connected, the Guest OS then get the reader and I can add/remove drives without any dramas.
2. On the port in the VM settings removed all fields except Vendor ID, Product ID, Revision and Serial No. (serial number will really only make a difference if you have more one of the same device attached).
some theory behind this:
1. Once a drive (or card reader with card in it) is connected, MAC OS grab it (maybe load some drivers, put locks on etc.) and mount the drives/cards. If you follow the usual advice for USB drive by dismounting it MAC will dismount the drive/card - but not the controller/card reader it is on (at least in the case of a card reader). Hence all the dramas that's been reported here. You can almost think the card reader to be like a USB HUB. Without anything on it to mount, I guess MAC is happy to let it go and VM can grab control of it, putting it's own locks on it.
2. The removal of extra information on the added port is an old trick reported in forums when having issues with USB drives. Not sure if it made a big difference in this case, it did in the past for some WD USB HDDs I had. Warning though: do not remove all fields, otherwise you find other devices attached such as keyboard. The information in these fields are used to match to devices. Any empty field will match ALL devices i.e. wildcard, as one of the previous posters commented in regards to his mouse and keyboard being attached.
