Guest OS not accessing USB drives; shuts down improperly

Post by CHUCKsPowerFist »

I am currently running the latest version of VirtualBox 4.2.4 on a 15" Macbook Pro Retina with Mac OS X 10.8.2.
One of my first complaints is that I wanted to connect a USB flash drive to host OS's like Windows 98 or BackTrack Linux, but VirtualBox cannot access it. Yes, I made sure I used one CPU core. Yes, I ejected the USB drive from Mac OS X Finder before trying to connect to the device. Afterwards,I tried to connect to the device by clicking Devices > USB Devices > "my flash drive" for two times before I get this error:

{{{ Failed to attach the USB device '''Unknown device''' to the virtual machine .
Callee RC: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE) }}}

I have looked at many forums regarding this USB connection error.

In addition, I noticed that when I try to shut down my Guest OS, VirtualBox will close the Guest OS, but it will say that the virtual machine is still running and the Preview window will say "Inaccessible." (I have attached the screenshot in a zip file because the forum won't permit me to upload a picture larger than 128 KB).

When I try to right click the virtual machine and before I can click close, a nagging error pops up and says "Failed to open a session for the virtual machine ." When I try to close VirtualBox, I was left with no choice but to forcibly quit it.

In another case, when I switch from full screen to scale mode, the virtual machine crashes, and the VirtualBox says it is running but inaccessible.

Do you need to see the vbox.log? I have attached the most current vbox.log file. I can upload the previous logs if needed.

Additional, I get a VBoxSVC log file in /Applications folder.

Recovery: Quit VirtualBox and restart it. For extra measure, restart OS X.

I have never gotten a crash.

Suggestions for getting attention would be appreciated

I hope somebody could help us out on this. I can see a lot of people viewing this post but they don't seem to offer any suggestions. :?

I'm not sure if this is true or not but is the Windows version of VirtualBox less buggier than the Mac OS X version? :?:
.

I'm rather hesitant to spend money on on virtual machine software that I could actually get for free using virtual box but if I have no other choice then I may have to purchase something like VMware or Parallels. :(

What kind/brand of external hard drive(s) do you have?
So far, I have been using an 8 GB Toshiba Transmemory flash drive. I haven't tried other flash drives yet, but if VirtualBox cannot recognize the Toshiba, how can it recognize ANY flash drive?

That's interesting. Does the console window remain open?

Unfortunately I have the same issue.
OS X 10.8.2, VBOX 4.2.4 r81684
oracle extensions loaded in.
VM is ubuntu 12.04 desktop.

I have the filter set, and am unable to see a USB SDHC card reader... Also the built in SDHC card reader is not even an option.....

After getting the famed "Failed to attach the USB device Unknown device to the virtual machine . Callee RC: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)"

No USB Devices are even recognized... Everything had vanished....

Pardon the lack of repeating the initial Post.

I just noticed your reply, and I have also looked at the log files.

So, I had removed all installs of Virtual Box.
Reinstalled VirtualBox 4.2.4 r81684
Have Oracle extensions (for 4.2.4 81684) loaded.

Running on Macbook Pro 15, Late 2011 model, 16 Gig RAM, 2 HD (1 TB and 750G ) No CD.. (extra drive instead of CD)

OS X OS X 10.8.2 all updates.

I Tried to see a SDHC card that was plugged into the built in SDHC card slot on the mac. I could only see it using mac software (disk utility)

No way to access using any filter on the VM or using the VirtualBox software.

Using a separate USB SDHC card reader I am able to see the card reader using the VirtualBox software. I put it in as a filter in the VM, and when I try
to 'connect' to the VM (Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop) I get the error: Failed to attach the USB device Unknown device to the virtual machine . Callee RC: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)
Then I get blank dialogs and the VM appears to be hung. The VirtualBox Software shows the VM as running, but.. it has vanished.

If I quit VirtualBox, and restart it shows the VM as 'aborted'. I did find in the virtualbox log file 11/13/12 2:28:19.895 PM ReportCrash[3368]: Saved crash report for VirtualBoxVM[639] version ??? to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/VirtualBoxVM_2012-11-13-142819_S700.crash

in the crashreport file I find the following at the start:
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000011407300c

VM Regions Near 0x11407300c:
MALLOC_LARGE 0000000113a73000-0000000113c73000 [ 2048K] rw-/rwx SM=PRV
-->
IOKit 0000000114d19000-0000000114d9a000 [ 516K] rw-/rw- SM=SHM

....
(full log attached, had to change suffix to .log from .crash)

-----

I hope that this is better... Any other issues please PM me if I can help at all. Many thanks and best.
