WinXP x64 host, VBox 4.2.0, various guests.
I've been running Win8 Preview Release in a VM since august with no problems.
I also managed to enable aero effects (despite using VBox 4.0) by installing 4.1.x Guest Additions and NOT enabling 2D/3D accelerations in the VM's settings.
I recently upgraded to VBox 4.2.0 and yesterday created a new VM (with the same settings as the other one) in which to install a final release (Win8 Enterprise). OS installation was flawless, as well as the installation of Guest Additions.
Then, when I dragged to enlarge the VM's window, expecting the guest resolution to change accordingly as usual, I got strange behaviours. While dragging, the guest screen randomly and sequentially took on different aspects: it remained unchanged (with grey bars filling the difference between the guest "screen" and the window size), it flashed showing artefacts, it normally fitted the window size and so on.
When I tried to change the guest resolution by selecting a higher value in the guest's screen settings, I also got random effects: sometimes the change worked, sometimes I got a message saying that the selected resolution could not be set.
Moreover, during one of the dragging attempts, the guest resolution fitted the window size BUT the guest screen got completely messed up and the VM freezed; I had to shut it down the "hard" way. When I tried to restart it Win8 showed for about 5 minutes a message saying something like "trying to restore" and then gave up, showing a list of options similar to the "old" F8 menu. I had to start the VM in VGA mode and uninstall/reinstall Guest Additions.
Then I made a few more attempts to increase the resolution; again I got the random behaviours but this time I was more lucky and I managed to obtain an acceptable window size, which I... decided NOT to change any more. :]
After that, while using the VM with the same (portable) programs I used in the Win8 preview VM, I noticed that the transparency effects are working partially. For example, while the taskbar is actually transparent, the title bars of applications are not, while they are transparent in the Win8 Preview VM.
So, is the GA video driver not compatible with the final releases of Windows 8 or what?
