Hi, I am having major problems trying to use my VM as a web server for development, i will explain my setup and then the problem:
Setup:

MBP as host
Unbuntu 12.04 lts as the guest
on the guest i have installed virtualenv for my Django projects, i have the server running on 127.0.0.1:8000 for Django

The problem.

on the virtual machine if i set the network adapter type to Nat i get internet on the VM but can not connect to the vm from the host.

so i did some research and it says to use a bridged connection on the VM so that the router which is assigning the ip to the host also assigns one to the guest etc.

so i set that going but for some reason the guest doesnt see any wireless networks. i have tried adjusting settings and added the wireless network manually (at the time of writing i am at uni so i was trying to get to Eduroam)

does anyone have ideas on how i can fix this?

Your guest simulates a cabled NIC - regardless of the physical connection.

The only question is what host NIC your simulated cabled NIC uses. You can bridge to a host wireless NIC - that's fine, that should work, but the guest will still see a wired NIC because that's what virtual hardware does: it looks the same regardless of actual host hardware.

I understand this, but the problem is the guest regardless of the fact that it is set to use the airport (wireless) on the host will not see any networks. which is my problem i am going to try it tonight when i get home on my home network to see if it is due to the network in the uni, as it requires wpa2 enterprise auth

I'm really not understanding your problem. The authorisation of the wireless connection is something which only the host will care about. The guest only cares that a connected NIC of any sort is available. So if your host has an internet connection then your guest should be able use it, earlier caveats aside. The guest does not need a separate wireless authorisation - only one physical connection is made.

well i am not sure what the problem is at uni, but as soon as i am at home it works straight out of the box. i am on campus again tomorrow, so i will try again, and then i will also be able to post a screen shot of what i see

I suggest that you also talk to your IT department at the UNI. They also restrict by MAC address at most of these places as well.

I use pagekite which gives my Virtual Machine a public address -- this address is accessible from my host

I highly recommend pagekite It is very simple to use and takes less than 2 minutes to get up and running.

I do my rails development inside the virtual machine which is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I do OSX development on my host, pointing to my public address that is provided by pagekite

I would have posted examples of how to use it, and where to get it, but you'll have to do a google search because of the lame restrictions on this forum.
