Unable to install 12.10 - SMBus uninitialized

Post by Coyote Ugly »

Hi, on a Windows Vista host PC I'm trying to install a Virtual Machine with Ubuntu Desktop 12.10.
I set the boot from the ubuntu ISO, the Virtual Machine start up, but i can't proceed to intall ubuntu becouse during the loading of the Live CD (purple background, "Ubuntu 12.10" text and 4 dot in the middle of the screen) I see this message:
[ 144.050230] piix4_smbus 0000:00:07.0 >SMBus base address uninitialized - upgrade BIOS or use force_addr=0xaddr

and the loading break.

Why this error? How can I proceed to installal my ubuntu 21.04 guest?
Do you need more details?

Thanks.

That message is normal I believe, not an error but a warning which you can ignore.

Post the VM log file for a failed session. The VM log file is called "VBox.log", and can be found in the "Logs" subfolder of your VM folder. Post the log as a .zip attachment please.

I think you are using too much RAM. You can't use more RAM than is available on your host. And while your setting is technically less, once you add simulated VRAM and other sundries you leave practically nothing.

Also, try enabling the "IO APIC" feature.

Enabling the "IO APIC" feature and setting 768 Mb of RAM it works form me.
Thanks a lot, great.

But... now I have another problem. I installed my Ubuntu Desktop 12.10 guest system without any problem, but now the guest system does not detects the mouse. I can't use nothing...
Do you need anything? Logs, ecc.. ?

Thanks!

The guest should have no problem detecting a mouse - just make sure you aren't doing anything dumb like installing a USB filter to steal the mouse from the host (mouse events come from the host OS, not from USB, so if the host loses the mouse...).

Install the Guest Additions to have an integrated mouse and better graphics.

No matters. After a reboot of guest and host now the mouse is detected.

Thanks a lot. Regards.
