w7 host and wxp guest - bridged networking does not work

Post by davege »

Hey,

I have a windows 7 host with virtualbox 4.2.4 r81684 installed on it.
I have created a windows xp (sp3) guest in it, and have configured bridged networking.

The host gets the following IP-information:

I would expect to get an ip-address in the same range as the host (10...) but I end up with a 192-range. The dhcp-server is also from that range, and because of this I cannot connect to the outside from the guest (not even to the host).
Any ideas how I can fix this?

Thanks,
Dave

If the guest is being assigned an IP address then it is communicating with the DHCP server - which means it is communicating, which means bridged networking is in fact working. Now all you need to find out is why you can't get out. Are you using a company server?

10.x IP addresses are very odd btw. It's an address range reserved for private networking, and in an VBox context I associate them with NAT virtual networking. The 192-x range I would consider typical for an address served up by a router on a LAN and intended for communication with the wider internet.

Thanks for the reply mpack.

my host is indeed a company laptop and we are all getting ip's in the 10-range.

When I configure NAT for the networking, the guest also gets a 10-range ip and I can get out without problems.

Any further ideas?

First question that come to mind : are you allowed to add an unknown machine to the network? any company policy on the matter? If not, it could be that the network admins blocked access to anything unknown.
Just a wild guest here before doing some hard troubleshooting :)

When NAT is used the 10.x address is correct and comes from VirtualBox's internal DHCP server - but it's a dummy address which the outside world never sees. When you use bridged then your LAN provides the DHCP server, and if that is also serving up a 10.x address then you cannot use that address to access the internet: private addresses can only be used on private subnets. If your description is at all correct then you must be using some kind of proxy which probably means that you need IT support to enable your VMs access to that proxy.

Caveat: I am certainly not a networking expert, so I'm happy to be corrected by someone who is.

I agree that this is very odd. The guest is obviously getting an IP from a DHCP server, but is getting a private IP from a different DHCP scope from the one the host is using. This should only happen if they are in different network segments (or different VLANs). The only people who could possibly explain this are the networking guys at your workplace.

It may also be worth running the command "VBoxManage showvminfo <vmname>", and posting the results here.

I have been out for a few days...

On my laptop I have the following ip-info, proxy server is also configured:

Re: w7 host and wxp guest - bridged networking does not work

Post by davege »

must have been some install issue I'm afraid.

I uninstalled virtualbox and installed it again (not installing the host-only networking because I don't need that).
Now bridged networking works fine and an ip-address in the correct range is given
