2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
Hello,
I have a Win7 VDI which works proper without any problems on a WinXP Host and on a Win7 Host.
Now I want to start the VDI on a Win2008R2 64Bit Server, AMD 64x2 DualCore, 2GB RAM:
I see the VirtualBox start screen and then a black, blank screen with a cursor line in the left corner at the top - that's it. Nothing more happened.
Can anyone give me a hint or link, what I have to do, that the VDI works also on the 2008R2 Server?
The Logfile is in the attachment.
Thanks, Skymag.

Re: 2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
Read the top of the log file where it states the available memory and then down some where it states how much you have assigned to the guest.
Re: 2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
My english is not the best - I hope it'll works.
And I am newbie to virtualbox.
@PerryG
Thank you for your answer.
I've changed the memory size form 1GB to 620MB, I read it in another post, but the effect is the same.
But I saw another thing in the log:
" TCP server failed to bind to a port: 3389 [3389]
00:00:01.579608 VRDP: TCP server closed.
00:00:01.579707 VRDP: Failed to start VRDP-IN thread, rc = VERR_NET_ADDRESS_IN_USE
00:00:01.580849 VRDE: Warning: failed to launch VRDE server (VERR_NET_ADDRESS_IN_USE): 'VirtualBox Remote Desktop Extension server can't bind to the port: 3389'

...."
I am connected via RDP to the 2008R2 Server and there I started the VirtualBox.
Can I change the port for the VirtualBox?
OR - Is it possible, that my used 2008R2 Edition "Web" does'nt support the virtualization?
Parallel I found: Virtuelle Image-Nutzungsrechte for Web Edition = Gast.
For what stands this exactly?
Thank you, Skymag

Re: 2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
From your previous log.
00:00:01.552248 Host RAM: 2014MB RAM, available: 614MB
00:00:01.983386 RamSize <integer> = 0x000000002c300000 (741 343 232, 707 MB)
You can't assign more memory than is available. It might start with 512MB but will be slow.
You can change the vRDP port to what ever is not being used in the guest settings (display) while the guest is shut down.

Re: 2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
I tried with 512 MB Memory and RDPport to 4000, but the effect is the same:
Black, blank screen.
Is it possible, that the Web edition 2008R2 does not support to play VMs?

I have no actual working knowledge with "2008 web addition". Perhaps someone else will or you can ask Microsoft.

Minimum requirement is 512 Mb, so it should work.
Do you try to boot from the ISO?

@noteirak
I tried with 512MB and boot from the ISO: same effect: after the start I see the Virtulabox start screen and after a second,
without any working process, the black screen.
Any idea what to do or what to analyze?
Thank you.

Post your vbox.log again with the 512 RAM setting please, I'll check in it

Re: 2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
It looks like the VM boots the HDD but then Windows simply shutdowns after about 20 sec.
Did you export/import the VM or simply copied the files over?

Re: 2008R2 Host with Win7 Guest shows black screen
Win7 usually requires "IO APIC" to be enabled, I think.
Also, the injunction against allocating more RAM than your host owns applies to VRAM as well. The total of RAM+VRAM should be less than the host has available, ideally much less (no more than half). You currently have an allocation of 512+128 = 640, which doesn't leave much for VirtualBox and the host. I would cut VRAM to 32MB.

@mpack
I set the VRAm to 32 - still the same effect. Also changed the IO Apic - same effect, black screen.

Can you spam F8 when you boot the VM and try to start windows in safe mode?
