Windows 8 on Oracle Virtual Box -> no network drive access

Post by Tobias »

Hello,

I use Oracle Virtual Box version 4.1.20 on my desktop pc with windows 7 enterprise 64 bit and I have created several virtual PCs with Windows XP, Windows 7 32 Bit and Windows 7 64 Bit.

And they work, everything okay. All of them are in the domain and get their network drives correctly.

Now I created a new Windows 8 virtual machine. However, I get no network drive mapping.

The new virtual pc is in the domain like all other virtual machines.

And even if I try to connect manually, I always get "no access or access denied".

And some network drives can be seen, but when opening the first directory in the root directory it
says no access (but I really have access to those drives, I mean it works on the windows 7 virtual machines)

I researched several points here:

deactivate UAC (user access control)

windows firefall service deactivated

And I tried to logon with domain user, administrator, standard user,

no user gets the mappings and could access directories on the network drives.

On the windows 7 virtual pcs the network devices are visible at the start of the operating system,

when the "Logon.bat" works correctly.

But with the Windows 8 installation the logon.bat seems not to work,

even if a manually start the Logon.bat again, it does not work.

the windows 8 pc is integrated in the windows domain like the other virtual pcs, but with no success in the network drives.

a general internet connection is possible and the file server can be pinged.

so my question is: why is the windows 8 virutal machine not working in contrast to the windows 7 machines ?

I think the problem seems to bw windows 8, isn't it ?

I have seen, that there is a new oracle virtual version 4.2 available.

Maybe I should upgrade from 4.1.20 to 4.2 ? should i deinstall first or can I just install the new version and it deletes the older one,

but hopefully not the installed virtual machines.

I looked in several forums and noticed that some said it must be a microsoft problem for windows 8.

Do you kno a solution or a workaround ?

Thanks in advance !

now i installed the latest virtual box version and all the windows 8 updates.

however, the problem stays the same.

network drives and directories can be seen, but when double clicking one directory the message "no access" appears always.

has anybody an idea what the problem could be ?

Do you have any real reason to thing that this is a VirtualBox problem? It sounds like a Windows 8 problem to me.

Do you have any Windows 8 installations running on a physical machine?

no, I really have no idea what the problem could be:

I'm sorry I have only virtual machines with Windows 8 for testing purposes.

probably, it is a problem with Windows 8, but in the Windows 8 discussion forums they gave me the advice to ask in the virtualbox forum,

because they said it would be a virtualbox problem.

But what could be the problem with Windows 8 ?

I have a similar problem. I have Oracle Virtual Box with Windows 7 Host, and running Windows 7 Guest. I then upgraded the Guest to Windows 8.

It was fine initially, but after restarting the Windows 8 is saying there is network access.

I don't know what settings I should set in the Oracle VM for Network?
I tried to change the name of the VM to Windows 8 I'm not sure if that's a problem?

Here's what worked for me: Shared (host) wireless network connection with virtual host network only. Used nat for network connection in WIN8 VM. Seems to work. ( I am not a network guru so I figured this out by turning on all network adapter options on the win8 VM network options and it worked; then I ruled out the working setting by turning each one off and restarting.)
