Windows 8 Installation Hangs
Re: Windows 8 Installation Hangs
I have 2 systems, and they behave differently.
1) Intel i7, Windows 7 x64 host, VirtualBox 4.2.x: Windows 8 x64 installs and runs fine.
2) AMD X2, Windows 7 x64 host, VirtualBox 4.2.x: Windows 8 (both x64 and x86) hangs during installation. Blue window picture shows up and then doesn't proceed.
The settings for the both guests are identical. Perhaps I should try putting Windows 8 installation DVD on System 2) and see that works. I'd like to hear how others are dealing with the problem.

Re: Windows 8 Installation Hangs
Is this the BIOS on the guest OS?Jason7113 wrote:I was having same problem running Windows 7 and trying to install Windows 8 on V Box. I found that I had to Enable Vertualization in BIOS, this is done by getting into BIOS using F10 key, selecting Power option, and then Enabling Vertualization, it worked for me, hope this helps.
UPDATE: I just wasted another hour with this - all my BIOS settings are correct all along
Problem NOT SOLVED
In fact it may not be a virtualbox problem bit a Windows 8 problem

Re: Windows 8 Installation Hangs
Try disabling 3D acceleration (maybe even 2D) on vm settings.
All problems i had with windows 8 and server 2012 was because of 3D acceleration.

Re: Windows 8 Installation Hangs
I have also tried 32 bit & its the same - just hangs with the blue window screen.
Clearly Windows 8 is not yet fully compatible with AMD.
Its not fixed by BIOS, video settings, etc. Needs a patch from Microsoft.

Re: Windows 8 Installation Hangs
Change IDE Host Controller for CDROM to type: ICH6 . Leave the "use host i/o cache" checked. Wait up to 20 minutes for the VM to load (go eat lunch or take a smoke break).

Followed the instructions and gave it an hour before giving up.Theodis wrote:Change IDE Host Controller for CDROM to type: ICH6 . Leave the "use host i/o cache" checked. Wait up to 20 minutes for the VM to load (go eat lunch or take a smoke break).

GOOD NEWS: It works with 4.2.12 :)
Hi all!
On my PC, I had the same Problem, using either VBox 4.2.6 or 4.2.8. I tried to install a Windows 8 Enterprise Trial (32 Bit) guest under either Windows XP or Windows Vista (x64) host, but regardless whether I used an ISO-Image or a real DVD, the installer-DVD just would not boot. I came to see that turquoise Windows-Logo, sometimes also circling white dots... but that was it - regardless how long I waited.
Now I upgraded to version 4.2.12 - and it just runs like a champ!!
I have tried it under Windows XP and Windows 8 (32 Bit) - it worked in both cases.
Among other things, I had already backed up my PC and tried to install from the DVD that I had used to (try to) install Windows 8 on a virtual PC. It worked - so there was no principal problem with my hardware. I had also gathered some logs of failed installs plus info about my hardware. But that's all about a "dead bug".
Or is it?
@mods: If this was a recognized and fixed bug, here was independent confirmation that it's gone. If it's gone just by serendipity, I am ready to supply what I have gathered, so that it does not recur.

Re: Windows 8 Installation Hangs
It should be fixed with 4.2.12, it's mentioned in the changelog... just not very obvious.

I confirm that VirtualBox 4.2.12 works well with Windows 8 guest, both 32-bit and 64-bit. Yay.
