Protocol error, if try to mount ext4 in Linux Guest on win7

Post by rethus »

I have Vbox installed on Windows7 Host.

I have create a TrueCrypt-Partition, where ext4 is used as Filesystem. I Mount this Partition as Drive U:\ on Windows, and its appear - but is not readable, sure, cause windows don't support ext4.

If i choose now this drive to connect is as permanent Folder in Vbox, i got some errors while doing this (like Would you like to format the drive), but at the end, it appears on Vbox-Dialog as U and sharename "udrive"

I start my Linux-Guest and do a

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t vboxsf udrive /media/udrive
, but always got a "Protocoll Error"

If i mount a ntfs-Filesystem (same external disc, but not truecrypted partition) it works well.

What can i do, to get an ext4 Partition mounted on my win7-Host to my Linux-Guest?

Direct access of Ext4 is not native to Windows and you need to install a driver for it to be able to read the format.
Google mount ext4 in windows 7

When using the shared folder and you get a protocol error it usually means that you did not put the name in right or you are missing guest additions in the guest.

Both is not the case... i enter the share right, and guest-additions are installed.

So the question is... Can Vbox only handle those filesystems, that are be handleble by the host themself?

I thougt, even if vbox (cause installed on windows7) can't read ext4, but now where to set the mountpoint, that the linux-guest do all the rest?!
But it seems not to work in this case!?

Hummm.

I don't use TrueCrypt-Partitions but the fact that it is encrypted could be your issue. After all it is meant to keep others from seeing the data. Check the TrueCrypt manual or forum and see what needs to be done to allow access.

Truecrypt seems not to be the Problem, cause the system is mounted clearly.
If i mount it on my linux-desktop with truecrypt, it works like a charm, cause of this it's vbox-fault.
