VT-x/AMD-V not operational on Snow Leopard host

Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an early 2009 Macbook Pro.

When booting from the ISO image to install a new guest OS (Freebsd, but it doesn't matter, this happens for any 64 bit guest), I get this message:

"VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration has been enabled, but is not operational. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot."

I get the same result with Virtualbox 4.1.23-80870 and 4.2.2-81494.

Help?

Thanks...

Are you starting the host in 64-bit mode?

Oops, I'm not. Never mind.... :(

I'll try in 64-bit mode and see what happens.

So instead of trying 64-bit, I tried a 32-bit install, and got a critical error message.

This happens consistently every time I boot.

I included the log file but I had to truncate to fit.

Guru Meditation -4011 (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE)
Something else is using the VMX (hardware-v)
