Settings | Storage buttons greyed out VBox 4.2.0

I want to add a second virtual disk to an existing virtual machine but in the Settings menu under storage the Add CD/DVD Device, Add Hard Disk and Add Attachment buttons are all greyed out. How do I enable these? My Host OS is Windows 7 32 bit and I'm running VBox 4.2.0. The Guest OS is Ubuntu 12.04.
