VBox Guest additions upgrade to 4.2.2 breaks GUI centos 6.3

Post by Monu »

I upgraded my VirtualBox to 4.2.2 (previously I was using 4.2.0) yesterday and also updated the Guest Additions.
The guest additions build properly without any warning or error.
After restarting the virtual machine when I login as root user, I see just desktop background, no icons or toolbar, neither of mouse buttons are working.
But when I login as some other user, everything is fine.

My Host is Windows 7(64 bit), i7, ATI Raedon 5670 HD, 4GB ram
My Guest is CentOS 6.3(x86_64), 1GB ram, virtualization enabled

you shouldn't login to the gui as root, so are you sure this is a vbox problem and not a centos protection?

previous version(4.2.0) of Guest Additions was working properly for every user including root.
I don't know what is causing this :?:

I'm also having some issues with the 4.2.2 version, mainly in compiz, it doesn't work, I'm having the black screen issue on log in. With Compiz disabled everything works ok.
From my .xsession-errors there was a warning about Xdamage not been able to open the display, I have test it on Slackware 14.0 x86 and on Mepis x64, So for now I have downgraded to the 4.2.0 version.

Same here with debian6 + gnome2 + compiz.

So I created a virgin user and logged with it into gnome. Everything works (as it is metacity by default).
Now i execute compiz --replace >/compiz.log 2>&1 & => empty desktop (only background) and here is what I got in the log

OpenGL Warning: XDamage: Can't connect to display :0.0
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 186 requests (184 known processed) with 2 events remaining.

Yesteday everything worked smoothly in 4.2.0

Rollback to 4.2.0 fixed the issue.

My host is ubuntu 12.04 running kernel 3.6.2 with nvidia gtx 550ti under 304.51 driver

Yesterday I show the new Virtualbox 4.2.4 version, so i gave it a try. My problem with compiz (XDamage cannot open Display :0), still exists. Is this a problem with the vboxvideo or with the Xdamage extension? How can I run vboxvideo without the damage extension?

Not sure if this helps anyone, but...

I just upgraded VBGA 4.2.4 from 4.1.2 on my CentOS 6.3 VB, and my desktop loaded, but just the background (no tool-bars/icons/etc.), so I shut it down and tried changing settings one-by-one and restarted each time, and found that disabling 3D did the trick.

I reset all my other settings back to what they were and it still worked, but as soon as I re-enabled 3D, it crapped out again, so seems like the new version breaks 3D capability, unless there's a new step/patch we're supposed to apply as well, so if you know of it (or anything) - please share.

Cheers

Quick update to my own post,

I found the bug ticket on the 4.2.5 testcase, and it successfully addressed/corrected the issue, and it's due to release, so this should be a non-issue soon.
