[Solved] Win 7 Host not seeing serial/com ports

I have a win 7 machine hosting some xp guest os's.

been running for a while with usb serial ports fine.
Decided to change out to a PCIe 8 port serial card.
when i try to get virtualbox to attach to one of the new com ports it cant find them.
it will attach to the onboard com1.
I have verified I can use teraterm to connect and use the com ports, before and after i have tried to get Virtual Box to attach to them.
I have tried to reboot and attach immediately (no dice).

also what is this "D:\tinderbox"
I dont have a folder like that on my machine, I do have a secondary "D:" hdd...

any ideas?

"COM10" is not an acceptable serial port designation in Windows - for any application, not just VirtualBox. When the comm port number gets to double digits you are supposed to use a UNC device name, e.g. "\\.\com10".

"d:\tinderbox" isn't on your PC, it indicates the source code line (on the devteam PC/server) that generated the error.

Thank you I was not aware of the double digit com port designations.
all appears to be well now!

When I try to connect COM1 to my guest machine the dialog is greyed out, so no COM port at all is available. My host machine does have a number of double digit COM ports which of course I do not expect to see on my guest machine. But COM 1 used to work always, it seems like maybe this ability went away when I upgraded Virtual Box to a newer version, but not sure about that.
