New VM from Virtual PC VHD does not work

I am new to VirtualBox. I have 8 virtual machines (VHD) I created with Virtual PC and used in a Windows XP host for years, and later in a Windows 7 Pro host. I installed VirtualBox into my Win 7 Home Premium computer (because Home Premium does not support Virtual PC). I created a new VM with the iso file of Windows 8 Consumer Release and it runs fine. I also used Disk2VHD to create a VHD file of my XP laptop. VirtualBox opened it just fine and it works fine.

Five of the VHD files I used to use with Virtual PC do not work. VirtualBox starts them, the OS begins to launch, and then blue screens (in a tiny screen too small to read the stop code, except for Win 2000, which gives the code 0x0000001E), and then I get the "Windows did not shut down normally" screen, and everything repeats. Of the 8 VMs I brought over from Virtual PC, the two instances of Windows XP work fine. Windows 98 sort of works. But the instances of Windows 7, Vista, 2000, and 95B do not. I do not need the Win 98 or 95 anymore, but would like to have 2000, Vista, and 7. As I said, Win 2000 produces 0x0000001E. The Vista and Win 7 machines crash too quickly to read the code.

What do I need to do to get these other OSes to launch in VirtualBox? What other information do I need to provide you? Thank you.

Gene

The "hardware" emulated by a vm in VPC is quite different from the "Hardware" in a VirtualBox vm. For that reason a vm created in VPC will not necessarily boot in VirtualBox (or any other virtualization system). The same thing applies with physical hardware. A system installed on one PC will not boot on a different PC unless the hardware is very similar.

You can try to match the hardware setup of the VirtualBox vm (from settings) to match the VPC one, or you can do a repair install (to fix up the device drivers). Or you can do a fresh install. You know that works.

Hello Bill,

Thanks very much. I will mess with the settings, and then if necessary give the repair installation a try.

Kind regards,
