Windows 7 guest can't increase display resolution

Guest Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Host Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Guest additions installed without error

The display offers 800x600 and 1024x768 only.
The monitor is detected as Generic non-PNP and I also manually switched it to Generic PNP with no effect.
I tried manually adding a resolution with vboxmanage and it had no effect.
I tried giving the adapter 128Mb and 256Mb with no effect.
Auto-resize guest display (Host+G) has no effect.
If I go full-screen it re-sizes to 1920x1080 as expected.

Post the VM log please, as a zipped attachment. The VM log file is called "VBox.log" and can be found in the "Logs" subfolder of the VM folder.

The log looks ok. Have you tried simply dragging the corner of the VM window to the required size?

Yes, it just makes a white expanding border around the vm window.

Well this is unusable so I gave up and bought VMware 9.
