Hi,

I've got some "uses" for multiple computers, I understand that large companies are using virtualization to save money , I'd like to do the same. I am considering using virtualbox to run a media server, backups for all the tablets, smartphones,and laptops in the house, and possibly a security system with webcams.... would something like this work on one physical machine with virtualization???

I doubt that money is a serious consideration for any large company. Space, need for cooling etc may be more important to them, and even more important will be the ability to quickly move the VM to a new host in the case of hardware breakdown.

A VM is a PC, so pretty much anything that can be done on a PC can also be done in a VM, with slightly longer latencies. There are some things which VMs are not good at, e.g. anything that calls for top performance or high end graphics, e.g. games, or HD video rendering. Plus a VM can't use special hardware. As a server it should work quite well, since the VM latencies should be lost in the general network latencies.
