OS X Guests

Hi guys!

I'm kinda getting into virtualization, I've managed to get some Windows and Linux VMs working and I would like to make a step further.

What I want to do is making a working OS X VM, because I would like to keep my Mac as clean as possible (I use it mainly for music, so I NEED it to be reliable) and I want to try new apps without risks.

I've tried several times, with several methods, but I can't seem to be getting the results I've wanted.

I know that OS X VMs can "legally" run only on Apple hardware, and I don't think I'm breaking any rule, so please would you help me?

I'm running Virtualbox 4.2.1 on a 8GB Core2Duo MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8.

- I've tried to make a VM using the .dmg file of my system's recovery disk, but I don't think it's going to work at all;
- I've tried some "VM-ready" .dmg (like iAtkos L1 and L2M), but they give me many issues every time I try to install (long startup times, floppy graphics, no sounds, freezing on logout).

So, is there any way a OS X system is going to work, even on a Mac? And if yes, how can I do it?

Thanks for your attention!

Presently vb does not support the client verisons of Lion and Mountain Lion. Other virtualisation packages do, Parallels and VMware Fusion.

Oh, I see.

But I don't want to pay for another system just for virtualizing it!

And I guess that Parallels and VMware Fusion aren't free as Virtualbox is.

Will Virtualbox ever support client versions of OS X?

Thanks! :)

Just out of curiosity, why don't you just make a second partition and install OSX on that? that way you have one pristine install and one you can play with without fear of one messing up the other.

I just wanted to mess as less as possible with the "physical" drive, I've installed just the programs I need (Logic Pro and Mainstage) and Virtualbox, I'm trying to keep it as clean as I can!
