Graphics problems in Linux Mint / Cinnamon

I'm using Linux Mint (maya) as a guest in Virtualbox 4.2 and I'm having weird graphics rendering problems with the Cinnamon desktop.

The desktop renders as all white and the menu is filled with blue rectangles. This flickers on and off between normal desktop and this whenever the mouse moves over the lower taskbar or any of the popup menus associated with it. If I disable 3D acceleration in Virtualbox then the problem goes away, but then Cinnamon falls back to something that looks like Gnome classic.

I've noticed some other rendering bugs in Ubuntu 12.04 Unity as well but nothing near the severity of this. (The transparent shading on the icon bar on the left gets brighter and brighter and then goes dark again. It's supposed to stay the same dark shade. Also I see the desktop flash all white sometimes, but only for an instant.)

Anyone else have similar problems? How do you track down the source of a problem like this? I don't know if it's a Cinnamon bug or a Virtualbox bug. But the other graphics weirdness in Ubuntu make me think it's probably Virtualbox.

Using:
Virtualbox 4.2 on Windows 7 64-bit Host
Linux Mint (maya, x86_64) using Cinnamon 1.6 (latest pre-release version) as well as the older release version.
Running version 4.2 guest additions.
AMD Athlon II X4 620
GeForce 9100 with latest nvidia drivers (306.97)
