linux VM on windows host

After installing linux mint os installed on a Windows 7 host I am rec'ing the following error
on every login attempt. How can this be solved.
users $home/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. file should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. Users $Home directory must be owned by the user and now writable by another user.

This is not a OS specific question. Its a Virtualbox issue. I have also created a VM w/ unbuntu and Fedora, with the same issue when i try to
login.

No, it certainly is not. It's clearly an error message being issued by the Linux guest, not by VirtualBox. Furthermore the error message concerns Linux filesystem permissions, which is a software matter with absolutely no relevance to the hardware simulation provided by VirtualBox.

To reiterate what mpack has said, this is an issue with your GNU/Linux installs. I am not sure how you are managing it, but the "/home" folder permissions are getting messed up.
Try a web search for that exact error message and seek help in the relevant forums or IRC channel.
You may also want to make sure that you are following the install steps correctly (for Ubuntu that is really just next, next, next).
