Problem with Virtual NIC and Physical NIC.

Post by termvrl »

Hi all,
i need to clarify a few things.
1. Can i assign multiple virtual NICs to one physical NIC within the same Virtual Machine. Is it can leads to problems?
2. Can i assign eth0(non-promisc mode) and eth1(in promisc mode) to one physical NIC within the same Virtual Machine?

Thanks!!!

1 Are the Virtual NICs in different VM's? There is no gain in running more that one virtual NIC except to bridge to different connections. You could have one virtual NIC connected to a Virtual network so your VMs can talk to each other, and another Virtual NIC bridge to a Physical NIC to provide an external connection.

2. Not sure what you mean by this.

My only time I have worked with multiple NIC's was having one bridge to the host to provide a LAN connection, and a USB WiFi dongle connected to provide an internet connection. Using the USB config to patch through to the USB and installing the drivers on the VM worked fine. This was using a Win XP VM and an Ubuntu 11.04 Linux host.
Best wishes
