Adding new NIC on vbox
Adding new NIC on vbox
Hi All,
Good Day!
i trying to add another eth on my ubuntu 12.04 machine. i install vbox on windows7.
i set eth0 and eth1 connect using bridged adapter, both cannot go to internet.
when i try to add another new nic using NAT adapter, i cannot connect to internet too.(i add this eth2 while the machine running)
i have another ubuntu machine running using NAT and can go to internet.
i need your guide to understand networking in vbox and troubleshoot my problem.
Thanks.

Moving to "Linux Guests" since none of your questions concern your "Windows Host".

Post the results of ifconfig -a from the Ubuntu guest.

Re: Adding new NIC on vbox
From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.
Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Re: Adding new NIC on vbox
Nic1 = Bridged eth0 192.168.1.20
Nic2 = Bridged eth1 (no config)
Nic3 = Nat eth2 10.0.4.15
It appears that you need to configure the second Nic. Can you explain to me what you are trying to achieve?

Re: Adding new NIC on vbox
hi
i setup ids on this machine.
nic1 is for the management port. i use another pc on the 192 segment to monitor the ids.
nic2 is for the sniffing port. i set it to promisc mode in order to "listen" to all traffic.
because of my 192 segment dont connect to the internet, i decide to add another nic to connect to 10 segment.
so that i can connect to the internet.
Nic1 = Bridged eth0 192.168.1.20
Nic2 = Bridged eth1 (no config)
Nic3 = Nat eth2 10.0.4.15
is it possible to me to do like that?
please advice if you have other way to do it.
Thanks.

Re: Adding new NIC on vbox
Intrusion detection will work with the one Bridged Nic set to promiscuous mode and the ids set to stealth
Anyway this would be a question for the snort (or what ever it is you are using) folks.
I seriously doubt that the VBox Nat is what you want to use as that will block all incoming connections, but that is something you would need to check.

Re: Adding new NIC on vbox
Thanks for your response.
I will check it later.
If i add the nic while the virtual machine is still running, is it will be a conflict to the vbox?
because i always add/remove or change the network setting of vbox while the virtual machine still on.
i worry that will be the cause.
