No Network Adapters in Windows XP guest

Hello,

I attached a windows XP VMDK file to a new Virtualbox VM in a Linux box (Ubuntu 12.04).
VirtualBox version: 4.2
The VMDK was created with VMWare Fusion on MacOS X.

With Guest Additions installed and a NAT adapter activated,

ipconfig /all

returns nothing (except 'windows IP configuration').
In VMWare Fusion, this VM was able to connect to the internet (with a NAT adapter).

In the guest, in Device Manager, there is no 'Network Adapters' category.
However, under 'Other devices', there is one Ethernet controller device with a status message saying 'The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)'.

Do you think it boils down to a Windows issue ? I already tried to re-install the Guest Additions.

Remove the one under other devices and then rescan and see if it picks up the VirtualBox network adapter. You should also make sure that the network section in the guest settings is set properly.

The VirtualBox network adapters are not picked up after a rescan.
Ethernet controller is back under 'Other devices'.

In the VM settings I tried another adapter type in NAT mode (Intel Pro/1000 MT desktop and server instead of the default PCNet-FAST III), to no avail.

Could it be that the VM is infected by a virus ?

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

I converted the disk from vmdk (split in 2G files) to VDI.

I still have the iso, it's 238 MB large and the info file says it was "slimmed down with nLite to remove
anything not essential for installation on the Asus Eee-PC2".

Then you have the answer. The network drivers for vbox are slimmed down too.

Options:

1) Use a full XP instead of a crappy version (dont sound legal what you are trying, sounds like manufactured by the company "TorrentSoft")

2) If legal: set VBOX NIC Settings to Intel Card and download driver from intel homepage.
