Windows 8 Host Problems

Post by DeathOfAMudkip »

Boot Problem:

Here's my setup. I have a multiboot Raid5 computer booting windows 7 and windows 8 from VHDs and VHDXs respectively. After installing VirtualBox 4.2 My computer started having issues booting, it would hang on the load screen. Yesterday, it stopped getting past the hang at all. I was able to start in safe mode, but not normally even with Diagnostics mode selected in msconfig (system configuration). I could boot to Windows 7, and to other installs of windows 8 which did not have VirtualBox installed.

I tried to uninstall VirtualBox from within safe mode but couldn't. To get my computer to boot I had to start from a Windows 8 RE, and use DISM to remove all Oracle drivers.

Network Problem

I've found that Having Hyper-V installed with an External Adapter along with VirtualBox creates a conflict, Disabling VirtualBox's adapter in the Network and Sharing center seems to have fixed the issue for me.

Accelerator Problem

If Hyper-V is enabled, VirtualBox is unable to use the hardware acceleration features.

All in all, if I remember correctly, VirtualBox seemed to work fine as long as Hyper-V wasn't enabled. I was more concerned with fixing my computer than running too many test to find out though, so for now I'll just use it under Windows 7. It may have been easier to just use DISM to disable Hyper-V but I won't know if that would have worked. Should've tried that.

If anyone knows why the Oracle drivers would cause windows to hang please let me know.

Please keep Windows 8 Host discussion to the sticky thread at the top of this forum, until such time as Win8 officially exists.
