The only thing that springs to mind is that you must have admin rights to install VirtualBox (i.e. "Run as administrator" if your user account doesn't have admin rights anyway).

Really would like to use VirtualBox on my system.

VirtualBox on a Windows host uses the hosts MSI installer function. You might want to Google for how to diagnose MSI installer problems, including how to get it to create a log file.

I'm curious. How do you come to have a "C:\Users" folder on an XP host? Also, what is drive E:\ and how is it involved in the installation?

First, a small question about the terminology:

'Host' here means the operating system VirtualBox is run on, is this correct ?

I thought that's very common for a Windows OS, isn't it ?
The Users folder contains folders/data for All users and the different user accounts.

It's just another partition I have on my HD. I have saved the VirtualBox install file to the E:\ drive and tried to install from there due to low free space on my system partition (C:\)

It's common on Vista and later. In XP the equivalent folder is called "Documents and Settings". The fact that a standard host folder has an unusual name should probably be no problem - in theory - but if I started having problems installing stuff then I would bear this unusual feature in mind.

Ah good, I wondered if perhaps you were trying to force VBox installation to an unusual target drive too (the install script does say that E:\ is the target, but the MSI service may have different meaning for "target" than I do.

Well, indeed I tried to install VBox on a non-system partition first because here C:\ is usually reserved for system/OS stuff, but as I know this can sometimes lead to problems I also tried installing to C:\ with the same error message.
