How to start headless VMs from the GUI

Post by John W »

The release notes indicate "allow starting of headless VMs from the GUI". How is this done? I start VirtualBox, select the VM, Settings, Display. There does not appear to have a setting for headless mode. What am I missing?

You miss nothing. You can't start headless VMs from the GUI. There is a third-party tool, called VBoxHeadlessTray, which allows to manage VMs from tray. As far as I know it doesn't support VirtualBox 4.2 yet, but I think it will be updated soon.

THANK YOU for describing how to do this! Running my server VMs headless is a real win for keeping system resources available for more useful things! :D
