Hi this is my situation
I had VirtualBox 4.1.20 with a Ubuntu guest with two drives - one for the root fs and one mounted as /home. Also i made a snapshot at some point.
I got a new SSD, reinstalled Windows and installed the newest VirtualBox - 4.2 and mounted my drives the virtual machine ran and everything seemed ok... but i didn't notice that there are no snapshots. So today Ubuntu asked me to update some packages and i did. After that i went to search for some of my files in my home folder and saw that they are missing. At that point i realized that there are no snapshots and my files must still be inside them(the physical .vdi files for the snapshot of the two drives are still there in the snapshots folder). I started searching for some way to mount the vdi files of the snapshot and found that WinMount can do it so i tried it - chose the snapshot vdi, winmount asked for the primary image so i chose that too but after that WinMount said that the primary image has been modified and didn't mount the snapshot.
Unfortunately i have no backups and i really need some of the files in my home folder.
Can someone help me to recover them please.

It is not possible to recover files from what you call a snapshot. The "snapshot" is not a complete disk, it's just a fragment, useless without access to the remaining pieces of the puzzle.
