VB 4.2 + Linux Mint insanely slow after OSX 10.8.2 update

Post by Mandu »

I'm running Mint in VB 4.2 on OSX 10.8.2. It was running fine a week ago on 10.8.1; the main thing that's changed is that I installed OSX 10.8.2 and now it's horribly slow from the moment I boot Mint. OSX shows VB running at 102% even after Mint has finally booted. Mint's system monitor shows nothing but the system monitor consuming anything, but it's frequently at 90%. (Note, even after quitting Mint system monitor, OSX still shows VB using 102%.) Just the GUI response time is around 5 seconds.

I've rebooted OSX - no change.

I'm not sure what to try. Mint's VM has 1024M.
Edit:  My MBP has 8G RAM.

Anyone else seeing this?

Thanks,
Chap

Update: I let it continue to run, and after 15 minutes it settled down a bit. Now, with no applications running in Mint, just the desktop, the response is merely "sluggish" instead of "insanely slow". OSX shows VB consuming 30% of one core at present; Mint top shows an Xorg process using 6%.

Still pretty sure I haven't seen that much host CPU devoted to VB when the guest OS is essentially quiet.

Update: VB's "Check for updates" didn't notice that I was running 4.2.0 while there was a 4.2.1 available, specifically to address OSX 10.8.2 incompatibilities.

Another update: it didn't make a lick of difference, though. Still exactly the same problem.

Went back to VB 4.1.22, and booted to a (responsive) desktop in well under 1 minute.

VB still uses 25% of one core even when basically nothing's happening within the VM. Don't know if this was always the case or not.

But clearly VB 4.2.1 and OSX 10.8.2 don't get along, at least on my machine.

Pfft.
