VM updates result in start up problem

Post by jayatnashville »

Any time I get an update notification I dread it. Once I've installed the update I get the following message when attempting to start my VM:

"Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows.

Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found!

Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started. To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}
"

So then I manually download and install the current extension pack (whose version is the same as the VirtualBox update version number). Once I do that I'm good to go and everything works fine.

My question is must I go through this process every time an update is delivered? The other question is I see on the website that there is no extension pack update to match the VirtualBox update. So if no update exists why do I get the error message above?

Yes, you must go through that process every time you update the main software.
