shared folder - deleted file

I am posting this on the Windows Hosts forum because nobody on the Mac Hosts forum answered it. I have since realized that this is probably a Windows-specific topic. More specifically, a "shared folder" problem.
The issue is basically that I accidentally deleted a file in a shared folder, and I want to recover it.
My host machine is a MacBook Air, the guest virtual machine is WIndows XP pro. I had set up a shared folder, which resides in my user folder of my MacBook. While working in the guest Win XP machine, I opened the shared folder, worked on an MS Word file in the shared folder, then closed it and accidentally deleted it. Boom! Gone! Not in my Windows Recycle Bin, not in my Mac Trash bin. Gone.
Reading about shared folders, I learned that this is what happens. So it goes. My question is, how do I go about recovering the file? Do I run a file recovery from the guest Win XP instance, or do I run it from the host in OS X? Can anybody recommend a good (free) file recovery program that is likely to work in this situation?
Thanks. I fell into a booby trap, I guess I'm a booby. I really appreciate any help you guys can give.
