Hi all, quick question to anyone who can answer...

I recently attempted an installation of Win95 to a VM using Rich Menga's method and the latest release of VB.

I'm hitting a roadblock at the networked folder he makes though. I created one, following what he does but I do not see a corresponding folder appearing on the host machine as it does in his tutorial. This shared folder is necessary to transfer a video driver from the host to the guest as Rich puts it. Is there another way to transfer files from the host to the guest? If not, what settings should I change so I can see the networked win95 folder in the host OS?

Shared folders are a feature of the guest additions. And there are no additions for WinDOS.

Alternatives:
- Burn a cd or make a cd-data-image from the file
- Try Standard Windows shares
- Download driver from the guest via IE

I assume this is a true network share you are configuring, rather than an attempt at GA Shared Folders (not possible with Win95). The further back you go into Windows/DOS history, the more the networking stuff has to be manually installed and manually configured. Windows networking config only really began to get user friendly with XP and later. Basically, it's up to you to configure network stuff properly. I didn't have too much trouble sharing a Win98 guest folder, but I haven't tried Win95.

I imported an old (VBox 1.4.something) Win95 OSR2 VM into the modern world (currently VBox 4.1.20) and that has networking/file sharing (as it used to do). Host is Win7 Prof SP1 64 bit. My original outline is this post : viewtopic.php?t=866 (Win95 VM with Win XP host networking (shared folders)). Win7 takes (perhaps) some extra setting up (see posts by michaln). Bottom line: it can be done !!

Instead of trying to get a networked folder running, I just downloaded the relevant files onto my host machine, made a virtual image out of them with Imgburn and mounted them in the vm as per Stefan's suggestion. That worked fine. Once you get IE 5 on there, you can download pretty much anything else that needs to be installed through the guest OS.
