Cannot get 1600x900 resolution on Kubuntu[solved]

Post by swingkyd »

I have windows 7 host with latest stable Virtual Box. I've installed latest stable Kubuntu and the Virtual Box "Guest Additions." In Kubuntu, my resolution options do not offer 1600x900. It does offer 1600x1200, which expands too much on the screen. So I am stuck with 1024x768 to get the whole screen. Does anyone have any hints as to why I cannot get the correct resolution?

Thank you for your reply. I did look in the manual and it is not clearly described. The issue was after installing the Guest Additions, I was using the pre-compiled kernel drivers. After installing all headers and dkms stuff, I was able to compile the kernel versions for Kubuntu
After this, I had to add as per Chapter 9 of he advanced section xrandr VBOX_MODE parameter 1600x900 to get any resolutions above 1024x768. That last step was NOT documented very well at all and I had to lose an incredible amount of sleep to get it working. So if anyone cares:
  1. Install Kernel Driver as per UG
    Install Guest Additions
    RESTART guest host
    Add mode:

    Code: Select all

    xrandr --output VBOX0 --set VBOX_MODE 1600x900
(I cannot remember if I needed quotations around the last parameter)
    Set mode:

    Code: Select all

    xrandr --output VBOX0 --mode 1600x900
This is vaguely hinted at in chapter 9 of the guide in a section called "Guest graphics and mouse driver setup in depth"

Hopefully this helps. I can add more detailed step and code if anyone really wants. You need to be running "sudo bash" to get root and avoid elevation requests all the time.

Thanks swingkyd, that VBOX_MODE thing saved me from a lot of frustration! Worked like a charm.
