Windows 2000 and USB

Post by llandyw »

Are there any USB drivers for Windows 2000?

I am working with an image from an older computer in VB since I don't want to make any changes to the actual system.
I need to copy a file generated by a compiler on the virtual machine to an external hard drive.

I have the guest addons installed, but apparantly there are no USB drivers on it for Win2K.

So, if anyone has any idea where I can get said driver, it would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 2000 USB drivers are on the Windows 2000 install CD. You might finds them on the Internet but they are not provided by VirtualBox.

If you mean that USB is not working in the guest, then download and install the extension pack.

The extensions were already installed. No luck there. I'll have to see what I can find on the Win2K disks I have.

Time for you to post a log file I think - as a zipped attachment please.

Neither the additions nor the Windows 2000 CD has drivers that can be installed.
In the additions, it never tries to install anything while it just can't find USB drivers on the Windows 2K CD.

How something like this would get logged, and where the log would be saved, I don't know.

I checked the drivers in the additions installer (used the extract), and there are drivers for network, sound, video, monitors and chipset, but nothing for USB.

I also extracted all the drivers from the drivers.cab file on the Win2K CD and still no go.

Turns out this Win2K installation has only SP2 installed. This may be what's causing the issue.
I can't download SP4 from here, so that will have to wait till tomorrow.

As I understand things, Windows 2000 does not need separate USB drivers. They are integral to the system and, as far as I know, they are always made available along with the installation of Win 2k. Then when you connect a USB device for the first time, the necessary drivers are installed automatically without any need even to access the installation CD. (Of course, there may be drivers needed for the device itself, but not for a memory stick.)

This means that normally all you need to do to connect a USB device to a virtual Win 2k machine is (a) make sure USB is enabled in the machine settings - this will cause the USB icon to appear at the bottom of the VBox window and create the item in the devices menu, then (b) assuming the device is connected to the host, select it from the Devices menu or from right-clicking the icon to "virtually connect" it.

At what point is the process failing?
