Faking a Domain?

Hallo Everyone,

To do some debugging for a project, I need to set up Windows with a specific domain name but will myself not be connecting to that domain (i.e. it just has to duplicate the environment where the software will be running once everything is complete). At the moment my setup is using a Windows Workgroup (which I am also not connecting to).

Is it possible to do this (i.e. fake a domain)? I imagine that VirtualBox can do it and so am hoping that someone can give me a short nudge in the right direction (i.e. which menu entry in VirtualBox) or can send me a link to a HOWTO?

Many thanks for any tips that you can give me.

Regards,
Alan.

Why fake it? Set up a domain controller in a vm.

I took a look at Perry's description and that seemed complicated and involved the installation of further software (pFsense) and, yes, I think what I want to do is what BillG suggestions: Have VirtualBox run a domain controller with the address (e.g. "xx.xxx.COM") that I require.

I looked in the VirtualBox network settings and found "Internal Network" which included a location to enter a "Name" (domain name) I assume. So I did this and then rebooted my XP VM and went to "System" to switch from a Workgroup to a Domain. Here I entered the Domain Name (xx.xxx.COM) but got the message "Cannot connect ...".

I don't have so much knowledge in Networking so am hoping that someone can either guide me through it or point me towards a good HowTo?

I'm sure this is what I need and believe that once I sort out the syntax/steps everything will be fine.

Many thanks,
Alan
